ALTHOUGH IT MAY SOUND INCREDIBLE, there was a sense of relief throughout the country that was had been declared. The tension that had been building up for so long was over and at last the decision was taken. Germany, would now be made to pay for its insatiable conquest of other countries. Everyone in Britain was optimistic that, together with its allies, it would defeat the brutal fascist enemy just as it had done in WWI and in a shorter time!! As Jews, we were even enthusiastic about the conflict, for it was to be a was of justice and revenge against a diabolical regime that had brought immerse tragedy, suffering ad loss for our people. Not knowing what was in store for us, without any concept what it was like to be a soldier in the British Army, unaware of what this was to mean to our families, all of us at this age were keen to serve.
