Chapter 10

GETTING THROUGH TO VIENNA meant crossing a Russian held border, for their troops had conquered the whole area surrounding Vienna. It was winter and snowing heavily. The going was slow and having stopped to show our passes at the Russian-held frontier, we could not restart the engine of our command car. The Russian soldiers had the perfect solution - they opened the hood, poured a bottle of vodka into the carburettor and the motor started with a flourish!
